The acoustics of St. John's Church
are very good for live recording. The sanctuary is primarily built out
of redwood and other hardwoods.
Even though we had to take into consideration occasional creaking of timbers
and motorcycles passing on the nearby road, the acoustics were worth it.
No artificial ambience was used on the recording. The "reverb" is all from the natural space.
We borrowed a piano
from a church member who teaches piano. It was a wonderful Steinway grand.
(Thanks, Carylon!) (The action on this piano was like nothing else I've
ever played. You know when you've played these weighted keys!)
I set up my Sony DAT machine, Stewart microphone pre-amps and Audio-Technica (ATM31) condenser microphones (setup in a standard stereo "Y"). We had to learn along the way about how sensitive this equipment is...the road noise and the shuffling of papers were often enough to ruin a take.
